All sale items are FINAL SALE and cannot be returned or exchanged. Translation: Hello My Friends. When we first discussed themes for the Spring 2018 line, the phrase "Mexican Luau" was brought up. It meant that Hawaii and Mexico had a connection. While searching for a story-telling connection, we discovered interesting details about the Hawaiian paniolo whose lives and culture centered mainly in Waimea on the Big Island. There's another connection for you as Waimea was our RS headquarters up to the year 2010. The story goes that King Kamehameha I was gifted 5 cattle in the 1790's by an English navigator named George Vancouver. The cattle were declared kapu so they could not be killed and eaten, thus resulting in a huge cattle population which was destroying local agriculture. The king then gave license to a sailor to hunt the cattle. The sailor also domesticated them and established ranching in Waimea which eventually became headquarters of Parker Ranch, one of the largest Hereford cattle ranches in the US. The ranch needed cowboys so in 1832, King Kamehameha III sent one of his chiefs to California to hire 3 Mexican cowboys or vaqueros. They came to Waimea to roundup wild cattle and to teach the Hawaiians about cattle and horse handling skills. Hawaiian cowboys became known as paniolo from the word Español, the vaqueros' language. As a side note, Hawaiians became paniolo before the territories of the American West had cowboys or ranch traditions. This print "Aloha Mi Amigos" celebrates the Hawaiian-Mexican connection and the heritage that the vaqueros shared with the Hawaiians.
