Story Behind the Art: As a result of the past 30 years of war and foreign invasion of Afghanistan, most weavers have moved to cities where they no longer weave rugs. Therefore, newly woven Balouchi rugs are rare. This particular rug was made by skilled weavers in the traditional villages of Zakini, Taimani, and Kowdani in Herat province using a primitive method on flat wooden looms that lay on the ground. The wool used is 100% from their own sheep and washed and dyed with natural vegetable dyes in their villages.
