As a result of 30 years of war and foreign invasion, many weavers moved to the cities, no longer able to weave rugs making newly woven Balouchi rugs a rare commodity in the market. This semi-antique rug was made in the last half of the 20th century by women weavers in Herat villages. Woven traditionally on flat wooden looms on the ground with 100-percent wool from their own sheep, these rugs were washed and natural vegetable dyed. The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected.
