Features: One-of-a-kind Soumak wool kilim from Afghanistan Flatweave with no knots used in the weaving process 100% wool pile with pure vegetable dyes Knot count (KPSI) of 160 Vibrant shades of red, rust, black, and beige Story Behind the Art: This Soumak Kilim is handmade by the Balouchi tribes of the village of Mushwani in the Herat province of Northwestern Afghanistan in the 1960s. The weavers use the warp strands as the foundation and the weft strands as both part of the foundation and in creating the patterns. Due to its handmade nature, the size may vary up to 3-4 inches from the advertised size. With regular vacuuming and annual professional cleaning, this kilim can last for years. The majority of the weavers are women who reside in villages across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. Through rug weaving, we are able to create more jobs for female weavers who may not otherwise have the opportunity to work. Rug weaving also positively impacts the local community as farmers benefit from wool sales, and artisans create natural and vegetable dyes for the weavers to use in their designs. Imported. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen. The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size, and design, making each kilim a unique work of art. If purchasing multiple kilims of the same design, slight differences should be expected.
