Story Behind the Art: Most of the weavers in the villages of Afghanistan have moved to the cities and are no longer weaving rugs as a result of the past 30 years of war and foreign invasion of Afghanistan. However, this rug was made by the talented weavers in the Herat province using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation. The majority of these weavers are women, and by creating more job opportunities for female weavers, the community thrives from rug weaving as the local farmers benefit from raising sheep for wool, and the local artisans create natural and vegetable dyes for the weavers to use in their designs.
