Features: Handmade in the villages of Zakini, Taimani, and Kowdani in the province of Herat, Afghanistan Knot count per square inch: 190 Pile height: 0.25 inches Made of 100-percent wool Features traditional geometric patterns and lively designs in navy, ivory, red, and burgundy colors Story Behind the Art: Most of the weavers who make these rugs have moved out of the villages due to the past 30 years of war and foreign invasion in Afghanistan. This makes newly woven Balouchi rugs a rare find. However, this particular rug was made by the weavers in the villages of Herat using primitive flat wooden looms that lay on the ground. The wool is sourced from their own sheep and washed and dyed naturally in their villages. As a result of the handmade nature of these rugs, the size may vary from the advertised size by 3-4 inches. Regular vacuuming and professional cleaning will ensure longevity. The majority of the weavers are women who live in the villages of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, and creating jobs for these women supports their communities. The farmers who raise sheep for wool also benefit, as do local artisans who create natural and vegetable dyes for the weavers to use in their designs.
