Story Behind the Art: This Afghan Vegetable Dye Oushak rug is made by Turkoman weavers in the Northern part of Afghanistan and by Hazara weavers in central Afghanistan. The weavers use natural ingredients to create the vegetable dyes. Madder, the root of a spindly bush, is commonly used to create red; walnut peel for dark brown; pomegranate peel for light brown; and sparak, a wild flower from the steppes is used for yellow. The majority of the weavers are women who live in the villages of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. By purchasing this rug, you are creating job opportunities for female weavers who otherwise would not have the opportunity to do so. The community also benefits from rug weaving as local farmers benefit from wool sales, and local artisans create natural and vegetable dyes for the weavers to use in their designs. Note: Due to the handmade nature of this rug, size may vary up to 3-4 inches. Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen. Regular vacuuming and annual professional cleaning will keep your rug looking new for years to come. Imported.
