Story Behind the Art: The design of this rug originates from the Iranian city of Mahal and was re-created in the Bhadohi village in the Varanasi region of India. The majority of the weavers are women who live in the villages of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. This rug-making process provides job opportunities for women weavers who would not have otherwise been able to work. The community also benefits from rug weaving as the local farmers benefit from wool sales and local artisans create natural and vegetable dyes for the weavers to use in their designs.
