Story Behind the Art: The Afghan Vegetable Dye Oushak designs are made by Turkoman weavers in the Northern part of Afghanistan, as well as by Hazara weavers in central Afghanistan. The weavers use natural vegetable dyes such as madder, walnut peel, pomegranate peel, and sparak to create the beautiful colors of the rug. The majority of the weavers who create these rugs are women who live in the villages of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. With the help of Worldstock, HERAT ORIENTAL has been able to create jobs for over 2,000 local village weavers, helping them to greatly support their families. Additionally, the community thrives from rug weaving as the local farmers benefit from wool sales, and the local artisans create natural and vegetable dyes for the weavers to use in their designs.
