Description
8" X 10"" Red and Black by James Abbott McNeill Whistler was completed between 1883 to 1884. The painting is a rough study for what would have been a piece for a patron. This genre painting captures a view of daily life with a Grecian flair with the A-line red dresses, and the hair of the ladies in the painting pulled up with decorative headpieces. The painting is not named Red and Black due to the colors used in the composition but rather referring to a book written by French author Stendhal. The book, published in 1830, is about a provincial young man rising socially beyond his modest upbringing through a combination of talent, hard work, deception, and hypocrisy. He ultimately allows his passions to betray him. This may have extended to give us some clues as to what was happening in Whistler's life. This study was created using watercolor. We have recreated this intriguing study with oil on canvas. Frame Description: Elegant Gold Frame"
