This style of French café chair, also known to some as a Tolix chair, was first designed by Xavier Pauchard in 1934. While rumored to have been originally created for use in the weather forecasting rooms of French battleships, in is uncontested that these galvanized steel chairs have stood the test of time in bistros across France and abroad, if for no other reason than based on the merits of their ubiquitous style and overall utility.

Slight abrasions and variations are characteristic of the chair’s machine aesthetic.
