The aircraft has been operated by Air Development Squadron 51 based at Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Kanagawa Japan.The CH-53E Super Stallion was developed in the United States by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation and is a larger and more powerful version of the CH-53D Sea Stallion. It is equipped with three General Electric T64-GE-416 engines which give it a maximum speed of around 290 km/h and a range of over 1500 km.Sea Dragons are used primarily for Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM) with secondary missions of vertical shipboard delivery and assault support. But they can also pick up the slack for Seahawks when it comes to other roles such as assault support.
