Invented in the late 19th century, its form derives from the fact that all cocktails are traditionally served chilled and contain an aromatic element. Thus, the stem allows the drinker to hold the glass without affecting the temperature of the drink and the wide bowl places the surface of the drink directly under the nose, ensuring the aromatic element has the desired effect. Fun fact about the Martini Glass. Before 'shaken not stirred' made the drink and the glass famous, the martini shape was formally introduced at the 1925 Paris Exhibition as a modernist take on the champagne coupe. Hence the 'glass' was for champagne before becoming the quintessential martini glass. Today the glass is just as popular for not only a Martini cocktail, but also the Cosmopolitan, Manhattan, Brandy Alexander, Gimlet, Grasshopper, Appletini and just about any other cocktail that is served chilled with no ice.
