Aert van der Neer was a landscape painter in the Dutch Golden Age specializing in small night scenes and snowy winter landscapes. He served as a steward to the lords of Arkel before taking up amateur painting; however, his landscapes were not highly valued during his lifetime, and van der Neer supplemented his income by keeping a wine tavern in order to support himself, his wife, and their six children.
