Fujishima Takeji was a Japanese painter known for his work in developing Romanticism and Impressionism within the Western-style art movement in Japanese painting. After working as an assistant professor at the Tokyo Art School, Fujishima traveled to France and studied the techniques of historical painting. He returned to Japan years later as a professor at the Tokyo Art School and a member of the Imperial Art Academy. He was one of the first recipients of the newly created Order of Culture of the Japanese government.
