Thomas Hovenden was Irish artist and teacher. He painted realistic, quiet family scenes and narrative subjects, often depicting African Americans. Hovenden studied in Paris and eventually moved to America, where his home served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Thomas was a member of the Society of American Artists, an associate member of the National Academy of Design, and replaced Thomas Eakins as Professor of Painting and Drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
