William Sergeant Kendall was an American painter famous for his evocative scenes of domestic life. Kendall frequently painted his wife and three daughters, also modeling and carving sculptures throughout his career. After studying in Paris, Kendall returned to America to become a professor and head of the School of Fine Arts at Yale. His later titles included Academician of the National Academy of Design, member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and member of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
